I upgrade Ubuntu from 10.04 to 11.10, therefore pass from Gnome to Unity.

When I tried doing changing it to Gnome, the screen went blank. I have tried this many times and the same thing happens always. In fact, Unity is the only option that works.

Does it require some additional things to be installed for getting gnome to work? Or is there anyway I can fix it?

Thanks in advance.

I might be wrong, but I didn't think Gnome was installed by default; I seem to remember installing it from Unity before it even showed up as an option. Did you install Gnome 3? It's been a while since I installed 11.10, so I could be wrong. Also, if you're using the special proprietary video driver, maybe try uninstalling it and using the standard open driver. – Marty Fried Jun 24 '12 at 17:25
You might want to try reinstalling the gnome-fallback package, and see if that fixes the problem. – Aaron Jun 24 '12 at 17:58
