I recently update my system to ubuntu 12.04 and now every other time it sleeps it won't come back. When it wakes up the cursor works but I don't see anything other than that. If I type my password as if there was a login screen and press enter, it acts like it's doing something but still only the cursor visible on screen.

I'm using a lenovo 3000 N100 laptop with Intel graphics card 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.

Ubutnu 12.04 does not support Hibernation without some editing, did you update your "polkit" to enable hibernation or are you actually suspending/sleeping – TrailRider Jun 19 '12 at 2:32
It's likely sleep mode ... as I didn't edit or update anything to turn on hibernation. – Chris Jun 19 '12 at 2:45
doing a search it looks like you laptop has a Nvidia card so I will not be able to do you much good. Edit your question to change hibernation to suspend and post the model of you Nvida card and if you have Nvidia proprietary driver installed and you will be more likely to get quick help. – TrailRider Jun 19 '12 at 3:26

I have occasionally had a problem similar to this, but I don't remember if I had a cursor or not.

Not sure of the cause, mine was very rare. I don't even remember the last time it happened. So if yours happens ever time this may not work.....

What I did that showed my desktop again was switched to another tty screen and then back to tty7, when I did my desktop was showing. As you have been using Linux for a while I think you know this, but for anyone who might not you change to you other virtual terminals but pressing Ctrl+Alt+F(1,2,3,4,5 or 6) to get back to your graphical desktop press Ctrl+Alt+F7.

B.T.W. doing a google search showed that you should have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 but if you want to be sure run this in a terminal lspci

The third line down or so in the results will say "VGA compatible controller xxxx"

I'll try swithing screens next time ... I haven't tried that yet. When I ran the lspci command it says I have "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)" – Chris Jun 21 '12 at 2:35
I tried switching to another virtual terminal and it did but when I switch back it's still blank. – Chris Jun 23 '12 at 11:26
not sure what is going on then, to get a better chance at more expert help, edit your question to include your graphic card and Change the title to something like "Blank Screen on resuming from sleep-Intel Graphic card" it might get some more attention and better help than I. – TrailRider Jun 23 '12 at 15:04
