Possible Duplicate:
My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

I just set up Ubuntu 12.04 by using my USB flash disk. Installation justed worked fine, but after I got the newest update package and wanted to restart (doing so, I changed the BIOS boot order by putting HDD on 1st as it is normal), every time I try turning on my computer, just nothing at all happens?

Can you tell me any reasons for this? Did I mess up my BIOS - and if so, how?

I had the same thing on a fresh install from a cd. I got out of x by pressing keys like ctrl alt backspace, or ctrl alt del, or ctrl altgr del, or alt F!, or something like that (cant remember whch one worked, till I got back to a graphical login screen and clicked on the little circle next to the login window and changed to ubuntu 2D, which works fine, When I loged in I got a window saying compiz had crashed (the reason 3D didn't work). I've not got 3d working yet. Andrew –  user71351 Jun 18 '12 at 7:10
Not sure what you used, but [Ctrl + Alt + F1-6] switch you to the tty 1-6 consoles. [Ctrl + F7] switches you back to the GUI. –  Kurtosis Jun 18 '12 at 7:13
Nothing happens. As I said, I cannot even enter BIOS. Would taking out the bios battery make any sense? –  janmz Jun 18 '12 at 10:28

Same thing happens on my laptop, but it's just that Ubuntu is setting my screen brightness to 0 on startup/restart.

I fix it by using my laptop keyboard combo [Function + F3] to turn the brightness back up. Try that if you can, see if it works.

This didn't happen with any prior version, just 12.04.
