Krishna found that editing /etc/network/interfaces, commenting out (by putting a # in front of) the line that says auto dsl-provider iface dsl-provider inet ppp pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf provider dsl-provider and the line that says auto dsl-provider iface dsl-provider inet ppp pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf provider dsl-provider, was an effective workaround for this problem, and also fixed a startup delay with a"Waiting for network configuration" message. – Eliah Kagan Jun 30 '12 at 17:19

I too have this problem on an Acer Netbook. As soon as I sudo service network-manager start the network performs flawlessly. This all started about 2 weeks ago. No new software installed, just apt-get update and upgrade. I have Googled extensively and there seem to be many people with this problem but no consistent solution.

I deleted /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state at someones suggestion with no joy.

I can reinstall if required but would like to solve the problem as a learning exercise if at all possible.

As Jorge Castro says, this is a bug and should be reported as one. You can search Launchpad to see if the original poster of this question has filed one (those instructions explain how), but if you cannot find it, you can file a new bug report. If it's a duplicate of an existing report on Launchpad, it will usually be found to be a duplicate and marked as such. – Eliah Kagan Jun 16 '12 at 2:59
