I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. Here is some information about my connection:

I will be appreciate to any kind of help.

I do not know how it happened but even though I did not change anything (I did not even restart the system and the modem) now I am able to conect to internet via wifi. Thank you everyone for your help! –  Amadeus Bachmann Jun 13 '12 at 9:35

I had to do:

ifdown eth0

to get my wlan0 to actually work. I already had a lease etc. I'm running 12.04 btw.

Do you recommend running ifup afterwards? –  Eliah Kagan Sep 5 '13 at 19:03

Not unless i remove my usb wifi dongle which is identified as wlan0. The routes don't appear to work when eth0 exist alongside wlan0 and no network cable connected to the rj45 port. –  Mondain Sep 5 '13 at 19:17

I experienced the same problem , but I fixed it by changing router settings. I switched Channel selection from AUTO to 1. Apparently my problem occurred when automatically a Channel>11 was selected. In fact, my problem didn't occur continuously.

It can be several things, but i think is the firewall blocking all traffic:

  1. disk hardware failure, like I/O errors, can cause net to go off because it fails to store data from browser.

  2. firewall blocking traffic, should have a rule to allow out tcp 25,53,80,110,443 and also allow out udp 53.

  3. if you have multiple firewalls programs, running simultaneous, that can also became a problem, like ufw and gufw, it is better to use only gufw...

Have you checked your IP configuration?

 ifconfig eth1

and routing table

route -n

Just to verify what the problem was.

You can also check /var/log/syslog for errors using your editor.

If you are connected to a DHCP server(mostly the gateway), try manually get a ip lease using dhclient eth1.

Try pinging to your gateway to check if you are connected to it.

I have already pinged to my gateway and provided its output at my question: root@ghostrider:/etc/resolvconf# ping 192.168.1.3 PING 192.168.1.3 (192.168.1.3) 56(84) bytes of data. ^C --- 192.168.1.3 ping statistics --- 19 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 18143ms I tried dhclient but nothing happened: root@ghostrider:/home/zero# dhclient eth1 root@ghostrider:/home/zero# –  Amadeus Bachmann Jun 13 '12 at 8:11

If you are not pinging to to your gateway then probably you are not connected to wireless at all. Can you tell me how and what you used to setup the wireless router? –  Vishnu Kumar Jun 13 '12 at 9:20

Thanks. I was also having this same problem with my wifi and issuing 'dhclient wlan0' things are back to normal! –  coder9 Oct 1 '12 at 3:06

Seems that you don't have a IP address.

  IPv4 Settings:
Address: 0.0.0.0 <----- NO IP
Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0)
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

DNS: 192.168.1.1

Check IP with

 ifconfig

and route with

 route -n

So what is the solution to get an IP? zero@ghostrider:~$ route -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth1 169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 eth1 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 eth1 –  Amadeus Bachmann Jun 13 '12 at 7:55

Looks a bit strange. Do you have other devices in your network? If dhclient eth1 doesn't work it seems that something with your dhcp server is wrong. According to your routing table your default gateway is 192.168.1.1 –  mbs Jun 13 '12 at 8:27

Try ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.12 netmask 255.255.0.0. This creates a static ip, just to see if you can ping then anywhere –  mbs Jun 13 '12 at 8:29

And then try to ping 192.168.1.1 –  mbs Jun 13 '12 at 8:30

By the way: According to your routing table, your gateway is 192.168.1.1 and not 192.168.1.3 –  mbs Jun 13 '12 at 8:36
