Please provide more information. What are you trying to do when you get this error? –  reverendj1 Jun 8 '12 at 13:58

This happens if:
1. You are running the apt-get command as simple user. Solution: sudo apt-get ....
2. You are running more than one apt-get commands in the same time.

It happens usually when you try to run multiple Update / Install sessions simultaneously.

Eg.:

  • You have started the Update Manager, it is installing updates,
  • at the same time you try to run an apt-get install ... command from terminal.

Another reason could be if a previous Update / Install process is interrupted. It might keep the dpkg database locked. A system restart might help.
