After I plugged in a new microphone and webcam for skype, I installed pulse audio and then I did something wrong I guess, now I get no sound at all from all devices. Also not from my rhytmbox player.

can anybody please help me with this issue?

I think that is a connection problem. Maybe after you have connected the microphone, the audio cable has disconnected, or has been connected in anywhere else wrong. The other possibility is that when you set the microphone the audio has lost the good config. --- Tell us your SO to help. As you might have to check your audio settings. In Ubuntu 11.10: System settings --> Sound And check out the tabs: Hardware, Output and Applications. Tell us if is any of this or not. – Lucio Jun 7 '12 at 18:50
