If you have VLC maybe I can help you. Go to VLC 1: Click Tools and next Preferences 2: Click Subtitle & OSD 3: In section Subtitle Language and Default encoding 4: selected Arabic (Windows-1256) 5: In section font selected Tahoma font

UTF-8 may answer, too.

I've experienced this before, and I found it's because of subtitles' font, use Subtitle Editor to edit your subtitle's font!

you can get Subtitle Editor two ways, Download from it's house http://home.gna.org/subtitleeditor/ or, download via PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install subtitleeditor

Right click on subtitle -> open with -> Subtitle Editor, now Tools -> Style Editor, and there you can change your subtitle's font.

Regards.
