Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've installed a bunch of packages and made customizations, aliases, etc.
How can I create an .iso for Ubuntu that has my current state? Without any /home directories so it's fairly compact.

fyi - I have an ultrabook so the .iso needs to go onto a USB tick but that's not difficult, the main challenge is to create the .ISO in the first place !

Remastersys looks great but I couldn't find how to get it, all I'm seeing in the Software Center is a Deutsch thing!

The gui gave me:

enter image description here

apt-get install gave me:

sudo apt-get install remastersys
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package remastersys

I tried "ISO creater" but it's not intuitive or maybe a program that will do it at all anyway.

I see that Ubuntu 12 has remastersys and it look like my option "would" be here with the Distribution option:

I tried following these instructions:
http://bikramkawan.com.np/how-to-install-remastersys-on-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/
and I added the sources like this:

but still I get:

sudo apt-get install remastersys
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

E: Unable to locate package remastersys

Use remastersys.

http://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu.html

Please read the instruction carefully.

  1. In Firefox, go to :

    http://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu/remastersys.gpg.key.

save file as text someplace where you can find it.

  2. In synaptic, go to Settings/Repositories; select Authentication tab and Import Key File just downloaded.

  3. Still in synaptic, go to Other Software tab and click Add, then enter the apt line

    deb http://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu oneiric main

  4. After adding it, a new apt line will automatically added ended with Source. You need to uncheck it

  5. Leave the repositories tab and "Reload".

  6. Search for remastersys and select for install. Edit/Apply Marked Changes.

this didn't work, I'll update the question with details. – Michael Durrant Jun 4 '12 at 18:59
This solution correctly shows loading an Oneiric (Ubuntu 11.10) key, but your screen shots show Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) sources. – david6 Jun 5 '12 at 9:11
sure. Well I am definitely running 11.10 so tried again but still not working and stuck. – Michael Durrant Jun 7 '12 at 5:11
don't use geekconnection url. Use remastersys url as posted in the link. And don't forget to uncheck source line. – Web-E Jun 7 '12 at 5:56
try donwloading all debs from this url - remastersys.com/downloads . You have to take care of dependencies if any. – Web-E Jun 7 '12 at 6:03
