When I try to run something with wine, nothing happens!

I have had many problems with Ubuntu so I have tried to get Windows 8 back on the computer, but because Ubuntu can't run exe files I can't open the installer.

Furthermore my computer can't boot from a CD/DVD anymore after I installed Ubuntu. It turns up with a black screen with a blinking marker at the upper left corner of the screen and after 10 minutes it says something like:

Can't boot from the selected media device - select another!

How do I get Windows back?

You can't install Windows 8 from Ubuntu. You will need to install another Windows version first. You can install Windows from a USB key if the CD is not working, but you will probably find better answer about installing Windows in a Windows forum than here. – Javier Rivera Jun 4 '12 at 10:53
Are you sure that the installer disc is bootable? – ObsessiveSSOℲ Jun 4 '12 at 11:49
Yes i am quite sure the 3 disc i have tried to boot from are bootable because the computer could boot from them before i installed ubuntu, i have now tried to boot from a windows XP disc, it did the same – Sebastian Raun Mikkelsen Jun 4 '12 at 11:51
Are you trying to solve Wine not running or Windows not booting up? – Sathya Jun 5 '12 at 9:18

How are you making this boot cd? Is it just a blank CD that you put Windows8-ReleasePreview-UpgradeAssistant.exe onto? If so, that's not going to work. I know very little about Windows but I'm guessing that you will need to use a real Windows 7 Installation CD to install Windows and then you can use that file to upgrade to Windows 8 once you've already installed Windows 7. – adempewolff Jun 5 '12 at 9:24

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

Wine is only a compatibility layer which includes libraries used in windows in order to run and install the majority of windows-made programs under your linux machine, ubuntu in that case.Notice that some programs may not be able to run under wine, or some games that need internet connection like steam.

First of all, how did you install ubuntu? Are you unable to boot to your windows installation CD from the bios and make the installation?Which .exe file is not acting properly?

I think is it worth taking a look at this LifeHacker article.

i installed ubuntu from a CD i burned. yes i am unable to boot to a windows installation cd AND a ubuntu cd so i cant even reinstall. its called : Windows8-ReleasePreview-UpgradeAssistant.exe – Sebastian Raun Mikkelsen Jun 4 '12 at 11:58
Unfortunately you will have to delete Windows from your ubuntu system,by deleting the partition in which windows are installed. You can achieve this using Gparted (System->Administration->Gparted(or partition editor). This problem has nothing to do with ubuntu or your bios,as "abcd" said. The best way is to install Windows and from windows install ubuntu(not from install windows from ubuntu). To sum up,you cannot install windows from ubuntu using wine or whatever. You need to install windows and then ubuntu. You could make a windows 8 virtual machine with virtualbox, but i guess that does not help. – Nick Jun 4 '12 at 12:35

First of all you have to realise the fact that Ubuntu is not the same to Windows. Ubuntu software won't work in Windows and vice versa. The .exe files are windows software which can't run in Ubuntu. Fortunately the wine layer can run some of the windows' .exe files, but it is not guaranteed.

Please, edit your question by including which .exe software is tried and what was the output. :)

Ubuntu has nothing to do with your BIOS, so probably your problem with bootable media is not related to Ubuntu.
