Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

I have an Alienware M17xR3 laptop running Ubuntu 11.10, and there is an issue with my power adapter when it is plugged in after OS has already loaded (i.e. when I unplug it when at Ubuntu's desktop, and then replug it in again). The problem is Ubuntu thinks its still running on battery power, and that the battery is discharging, and does not recognize my power adapter plugged in. Note that when the power adapter is plugged in when Ubuntu loads up, there is no issue though. It sees the power adapter just fine.

So what can be done to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Seconded. Any pointers anyone? This was the only issue keeping on 10.04. It used to work fine until sometime last week, when this problem cropped up (I know this existed in 12.04). The only way I can get my battery to start charging again is to pull it out and put it back in when the adapter is plugged in (the laptop will turn off of course, as it completely does not see the power source). I updated to the latest BIOS to no avail. –  jeshurun Jun 22 '12 at 6:10
