I've just run an update on my notebook after not using it for ten days and did a restart. After the Ubuntu logo, the screen goes black and it shows my PCs name and "tty1". It also says "changing basic rates failed: -22" among some other lines which don't contain a "fail". I powered the notebook off two times and I'm stuck at that point again.

Can you tell us your hardware (video card) and try booting an old kernel. – bodhi.zazen Jun 2 '12 at 15:25
It's a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v. Used to work flawlessly with proprietary drivers. How do I boot an old kernel? – arno Jun 2 '12 at 19:46
