I was trying to help my friend install Ubuntu (tried both 11.04 and 12.04 with the same results) on her computer, and it kept shutting down while installing.

After booting up from the disk, I would see:

[1.55602] Disabling IRQ #9

It would start loading the Ubuntu loading screen, and then after a minute, unexpectedly shut down. Tried about 7 times, and it always shut down at the exact same place.

Her computer has a history of heating up and shutting down when she was running it with Windows Vista, but we were able to get it to load Windows 7 no problem.

Here are all the specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium

Manufactuer: TOSHIBA Model: Satelite U405D Processor: AMD Turion(tm) X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 2.10GHz Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB System type: 32-bit Operating System

I think it might be similar to this thread, though we never got any temperature errors: Why does Ubuntu keep shutting down
