So, not 'black screen', but no side-bar (Unity) !? – david6 May 27 '12 at 6:29
This is a closer duplicate, with good answers. – Tom Brossman Sep 24 '12 at 19:12

This can be caused by multiple reasons. Try to reset unity. To to so, go to terminal

Just press Ctrl+Alt+T to start a user terminal.

and type:

unity --reset

try this as well:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity
