I tried installing the latest version of ubuntu using wubi. The initial stages of installation went smoothly. But after rebooting, when the Ubuntu was actually installing/ configuring, there was just a small black, blank window with title as "Install". There was no message displayed in it, but the mouse pointer showed busy sign. I was not connected to the Internet while installing, but still the window lasted forever without any prompt or any other option and this was for like 2 hours. So, from the options on the right top corner, I turned off my laptop. On rebooting, it gave me some error. I booted into Windows, uninstalled and again installed Ubuntu, but for no luck. I faced the same problem. Previously, I had Ubuntu 11.10 installed on my laptop using wubi. Please help!

Take a look at this, ubuntu.com/download/help/install-ubuntu-with-windows and see if you did it the same way. – Mitch May 25 '12 at 11:07
Actually, I did offline installion via wubi. I have the iso file with me. – MeetM May 25 '12 at 13:34
Please pastebin the contents of the log file from the %TEMP% directory: wubi-12.04-rev266.log – bcbc May 25 '12 at 16:47
pastebin.com/A14uM5EF I don't think there is any problem with wubi. – MeetM May 26 '12 at 17:02
I also checked the md5sum and its correct. – MeetM May 27 '12 at 14:38

I think you must be connected to the Internet to install Ubuntu.

Nope. Not necessary. I had installed 11.10 in the same way. – MeetM May 26 '12 at 17:03
Gif it a try anyway. You can read this:howtoubuntu.org/how-to-install-ubuntu-12-04-precise-pangolin – Julien Chau May 27 '12 at 19:30
I tried installing through net and it worked the 3rd time. I don't know what happened wrong 2 times before. I am facing some issues with 12.04. I will workaround/report the bugs/issues once I have complete knowledge about them. But I still doubt your(@julien-chau) answer because I had done offline installation of 11.10 with wubi. Anyways, thank you! – MeetM Jun 1 '12 at 14:32
The most important that it is working. Perhaps the installation needed some drivers or other things. I even think that it is mentioned that you must have a internet connection at the moment of the installation - but not sure about it. If you install with wubi that means that even Windows is active at the moment of the installation.I found this: "If you don’t have at least 4.5GB of available drive space, then you can’t continue. If you’re not plugged in, then plug in before continuing. If you’re not connected to the internet, then you’ll be prompted to connect when you click continue. – Julien Chau Jun 1 '12 at 17:45

I had the same problem, but solved by downloading the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, since my Acer laptop is 64-bit.

This is strange, since 32-bit operating systems (including the 32-bit version of Ubuntu) generally run without problems on 64-bit machines (just not the other way around). I'd suggest that perhaps what actually happened was that your 32-bit installation CD/DVD/USB or installation ISO was corrupted, and that when you downloaded the 64-bit ISO (or selected to install the 64-bit version of Wubi, which will download the 64-bit ISO automatically), it wasn't corrupted. – Eliah Kagan Aug 18 '12 at 2:44

I have an HP dm4 laptop (not sure how similar our systems are) and have encountered a few problems trying to install Ubuntu via Wubi. However, I eventually was able to get it sorted out.

First, when you are installing Ubuntu make sure you are using Wubi.exe itself and not mounting an ISO of ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso.

Also, make sure that when you run Wubi.exe the wubi installer downloads this file: ubuntu-12.04-wubi-amd64.tar.xz. This file will be downloaded, extracted and expanded onto the virtual partition, pretty much doing the entire installation within Wubi.

I would suggest you download the latest Wubi.exe from Ubuntu and save it to a folder where there are NO Ubuntu ISO images. Otherwise, Wubi will begin copying the data from those images which is what we want to avoid.

When you reboot you should see "Ubuntu is preparing to run for the first time" or something similar. (On my hp dm4 my screen always dims totally black requiring me to make adjust the brightness). After a minute or two, you should automatically be given the login prompt and your system is ready for use.

Hope this helps.
