Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have recently converted from windows to ubuntu with the 12.04 package. Today I was asked by the OS to perform a distribution upgrade. It said that only a partial upgrade could be performed. After doing this I seem to have lost my graphics capabilities with no 3D support and not all the desktop being displayed. All compiz functions seem to have been lost. When I look at my proprietary drivers they are not activated and I cannot activate them, this continuously fails. In synaptic package manager the drivers are shown as loaded. I have looked through the posts on askubuntu and I have deleted the, monitor.xml file, but to no avail. Any assistance would be much appreciated. As a long time windows user I have to say that ubuntu blows windows out the water!! It just seems to have a few teething problems :-)

Since posting this problem, the case has resolved itself, via the update manager. It seems the update manager is not as friendly as you might first think. Just accepting all the updates is not good practice, especially a partial upgrade, this should never be accepted. Which begs the question, 'why even program Ubuntu to ask for a partial upgrade??'. But hey, this is the Ubuntu we know and have grown to love ;-). Check this post for a full explanation on partial upgrading - ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859240.
