I recently tried editing my /etc/network/interfaces file to manually specify two IP addresses to my network card to set up an LTSP server. As a side effect my empathy accounts and my Gnome-Shell weather extension could no longer connect. I restored my backed-up etc/network/interfaces file and still cannot connect. I then deleted my prior connection in Network Manager and created a new one, still no joy. I also deleted my .config/Empathy directory and all of my accounts and started fresh, but I still can't connect. Then I tried sudo apt-get purge empathy and reinstalled and still can't connect. I have ran out of things to try. Could changing my interfaces file made any changes somewhere I haven't thought of?
