Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

When I start my computer it boots up in ~3 seconds (SSD) and my desktop loads. The keyring password submission box opens. If I press enter in terminal or the password submission box or to visit a website in chrome, no matter the place or time, I will be logged out. I then have to enter my password for the first time. (I have it set to auto login)

Any ideas?

does this happen with every user? – jP_wanN May 11 '12 at 9:25
When you are in a spot where you think entering Enter will log you out, press Alt-Ctl-F1, and then Alt-Ctl-F7, that should be your desktop. If it isn't try all of the combinations from F1 to F9, and mention which one you find your desktop on. What version of Ubuntu are you running? – John S Gruber Oct 5 '12 at 3:19
Do you have like a tty cursor on the top left of your screen ? I'm having the same problem and I have a SSD too. Maybe that's related. There is a bug report here : Return to login screen after press enter key – NorTicUs Oct 6 '12 at 9:57

I've seen this bug in at least two previous Ubuntu releases--caused in each case by a timing problem. That you both have SSD's may well be related. The difficulty has been that X has been started on TTY 1 rather than on TTY 7 and the login process for TTY 1 starts up and then interferes with X, killing it. After it happens once X starts up where it should. – John S Gruber Oct 12 '12 at 15:22
@JohnSGruber That looks exactly like it ! So, basically, we should force X to start on TTY7? Or postpone the start on TTY1? – NorTicUs Oct 12 '12 at 15:34
