I have started an install of Ubuntu 12.04 partitioned with windows XP home edition and am wondering how long it will take to complete? As I then need to plan whether to get my old laptop out for a bit while this one does it's thing... or to just do my stuff off my iPhone.

I got a surprise for you: if you config your wireless BEFORE installing or install it while wired you can browse the web while it is installing. Now way I here you say? Oh yes you can :) – Rinzwind May 10 '12 at 19:18
I wish I could also find a way to fix my latest problem on the web then :( Half screen and had to change part of the boot code to nomodeset to get it to load at all. Stressed now :( – Susan Cook May 10 '12 at 23:11
hang in there @Susan It is worth the initial troubles. Heck I started with suse in 2004 and got fed up with in 10 minutes later. It took for Ubuntu Warty to get me hooked ;) – Rinzwind May 11 '12 at 7:38

It depends on how fast your computer is but it should not take longer than an hour. For me took it about half an hour. If you remember the time it took to install Windows. It will be shorter than that.

Thanks :) The partitioning just seemed to be taking so long and it's the first time I'm installing my own OS. Windows XP came preinstalled two years ago when I got the laptop. However it appears to have taken 1hr 15mins if the screen I'm looking at now is anything to go by :) Yay Ubuntu again! (I had it on an old laptop but on version 8 windows was still ahead. However Ubuntu seems to have caught up/overtaken XP now) – Susan Cook May 10 '12 at 19:12

What is your laptop configuration ? Nevertheless, it should not take more time. Ranges from 10 mins - 1 hour max (Just plug off the lan cable or turn off wireless to avoid downloading updates. You can download updates later)

It's an acer aspire one (not 100% on the configurations) and the only reason it's taken longer is because of the importing documents and settings option that I decided to include. Although it now seems to have frozen a third of the way across..... – Susan Cook May 10 '12 at 19:23

if the installer is a bit older one from the time of installation(using installer to download o.s., files over a time later from having it(installer) already downloaded),because the application updates as it is under public development program in regular instances,need the new installer to have the installation process faster(installer having downloaded the times when wanted to install o.s on pc)
