I have no idea what is happening. Skype is unexpectedly closing on my 12.04 (32-bit) machine. It does it completely without notice. There is no message or bug report or anything. It reopens just like I had closed it on purpose. Has anyone had this issue? I am using Skype 2.2.035. I am not using skype-wrapper. Thanks.

Can you verify with System Monitor that you do not have any "skypes" opened in the background. This sometimes happens if you try to open Skype 2 or more times. – Luis Alvarado May 9 '12 at 16:13
Only one skype running at the moment. Not sure if this matters, but at one time I used skype-wrapper and removed the skype icon from the panel via this method. BTW, skype just closed again, and nothing unusual in the system monitor; skype process just disappeared. – preahkumpii May 9 '12 at 16:18
Could you revert back what you did there and reinstall Skype. Also open Skype from the terminal so it outputs anything wrong with it. – Luis Alvarado May 9 '12 at 16:25
When it closes, the terminal prints "Aborted (core dumped)". That sounds pretty serious :-). – preahkumpii May 9 '12 at 16:41

You have the up-to-date version. I haven't see this issue anywhere. Was your Ubuntu installation a clean install or a version upgrade? I'm just wondering if there are any problems carried over from your old system. Are you getting any error messages in any other applications, or unexpected crashes since you started with 12.04?

Clean install with 12.04 beta, and did an upgrade when the final release came out. Honestly, I have been getting a large number of crashes and error messages. Much more than in the past. Compiz closing...all kinds of stuff. – preahkumpii May 9 '12 at 16:17
Sounds like your upgrade failed and Skype is just one of the casualties. When I did a faulty upgrade I'm afraid I chickened out and did a clean install. Up to you really. You can try cleaning up your installation:sudo apt-get clean are possibilities ..... sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo apt-get update sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get -f install sudo apt-get --fix-missing install sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade – barrydrake May 9 '12 at 21:45
I did a clean install with 64-bit precise (which I meant to do earlier), and installed Skype via the Software Center. The same problem happens. – preahkumpii May 11 '12 at 6:03
I did another clean install with 32-bit Precise. Installed Skype via Software Center and it hasn't crashed yet. Still no idea what the problem is/was. – preahkumpii May 12 '12 at 13:20
Skype is proprietary and not open source. It looks as though this is Skype's problem. Looking at the Skype website, I doubt if there will be much help for the developers, but it would be good if you reported that there is a problem with Skype on 64bit Precise. – barrydrake May 12 '12 at 15:31
