This start to happen where often recently. while I'm watching a movie, or flash my video/display gets crash and the only solution is to reboot. I've experienced the same problem on Win7 but not so often like on Ubuntu 11.10 - 12.04 x64. Is this a driver issue or video card issue ?

ubuntu 12.04 x64 - ati radeon hd4570 - catalyst version 12.4

What does your syslog say ? – LoremIpsum May 9 '12 at 11:37
If you have this problem on windows, there may be a Video card issue(but not sure, most of the video drivers do the same) If you have another VGA or onboard graphics, give it a try, if it works fine, you got to switch to another VGA card (I have 2 nVidia VGAs and both are done playing games on it!, take care of your VGA card with high temp, or else it will be history) – Prasad RD May 9 '12 at 11:40

If that happens on Win7 AND on ubuntu you probably have a damaged graphics card. What you can do is to try the opensource driver instead. It will not be as feature rich, as the Catalyst driver, but you can try.

An interesting thing here would be if you can still access the pc in the case of a crash. For example connect with ssh . If yes, you can read the log messages in /var/log/messages or dmesg or /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if there is a problem.

what I forgot to mention this is a Mobility HD4570 on my laptop. And when it crash the sound is still working etc. the movie is still playing so there is no freeze of the system. I don't see anything suspicious in the Xorg.0.log - db.tt/gqaoUAaP – Tosho May 9 '12 at 13:53
you could really try to restart X in this case. – user61664 May 13 '12 at 21:57
