I've installed the GNU Smalltalk package and can get to the SmallTalk command line with the command 'gst'. However, I can't start the visual gst browser using the command:

$ gst-browser

When I try, this is what I get:

peter@peredur:~$ gst-browser
Object: CFunctionDescriptor new: 1 "<0x40488720>" error: Invalid C call-out gdk_colormap_get_type

Everything hangs at this point until I hit ^C, after which, I get:

peter@peredur:~$

Is there a problem with this package?

Did you make any customization that might affect gst? If not, this is a bug; please see How do I report a bug? –  Gilles May 5 '12 at 0:04

It's a bug, then, but the instructions for reporting a bug don't work. Alt-f2 does nothing. Entering ubuntu-bug gst-browser (or even just ubuntu-bug or ubuntu-bug <anything else likely>) in the launcher just comes back and says 'Nothing found', apt-get install ubuntu-bug says 'Invalid operation' and searching synaptic for ubuntu-bug also comes up with nothing. –  Peter May 5 '12 at 9:26

I meant 'ubuntu-bug gnu-smalltalk-browser, of course. –  Peter May 5 '12 at 9:37

Uh! ubuntu-bug gnu-smalltalk-browser worked from the command line. Bug reported: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnu-smalltalk/+bug/995016 –  Peter May 5 '12 at 9:47

Not really an answer I'm afraid - I have the same problem. I have tried building from source (from smalltalk.gnu.org) and gst works fine but the browser is no-go. I think the problem is in the source (though the build reports no problems if after configure you delete the libc.la file then make). Back to squeak :-) –  user67222 May 30 '12 at 16:23
