Is 12.04 less stable, or is it about the same?

I am considering upgrading my 11.04 install, this is an offline install that is not connected to the internet.

I run 11.10 on a 5 month old laptop and after spending about 2 days getting everything working correctly, except bluetooth which I have no use for. I have very few issues with this setup. no GUI glitches

I also run 12.04 on a 1 year old desktop but after spending 2 weeks, I still have major issues including: 1) media rendering incorrect colors at times, ( tried all drivers I could find, codec etc.) 2) both unity and Gnome 3 crash alot leaving me with zero control forcing a hard reboot. 3) a few other minor annoyances.

At time of writing 12.04 is considered stable. ( if you run Linux, You will be tweaking) It's really going to depend on your hardware, knowledge, and willingness to search for help in forums to get any Linux up and running correctly and stable.

At this time, my 12.04 setup feels more like work than a useful OS. Hopefully not for much longer. Being a free OS, I have no complaints, just personal frustration from too much trial and error and with several other things breaking & requiring my attention IRL I'm about over using 12.04 for now. :P

Every single Ubuntu release is as stable as possible. We can only report, fix or get workarounds for known bugs but never for yet unknown bugs that may (or hopefully may not) appear in the future. The latter are a general problem because no software is perfect. We can't do anything about bugs that are and always will be there.

If stability really matters I would recommend you wait until the next point release of Ubuntu 12.04.1 (that is supposed to be released on July 19th) when most bugs - event those we may not even know about yet - are fixed.

@Rizwind, Oh, neat. I will just wait, then I will do a one-step upgrade. I don't have auto-update, so I want to time the upgrade right to eliminate as many crashes and quirks as possible. :) – George Bailey Apr 30 '12 at 15:16
@GeorgeBailey: that makes much sense in case you upgrade from 10.04 LTS (your Q says 11.04). You can't upgrade one-step from 11.04. – Takkat Apr 30 '12 at 15:37

12.04

Because ubuntu 12.04 is stable lts release and you will get 5 year support. For me 11.10 is the worst Ubuntu version and 12.04 best distro, and LTS versions are more stable than non-LTS versions.

Note: you can not directly upgrade from 11.04 to 12.04. Try to upgrade to 11.10 and then to 12.04 or do a clean install of 12.04.
