I am using Unity, I can't handle multiple instances of the same app in an efficient way like gnome.

  • What's the best way to handle multiple instances of the same application and keep being productive?

I usually have a browser (Firefox), at least two tabbed terminals side-by-side (plus extra terminals with random stuff), and usually lots of open PDFs. Everything is two clicks and one long mouse movement further away.

Firefox's Downloads windows opens: I feel it "gets in the way" of quickly switching to Firefox.

I had exactly the same problem on Gnome Shell. But then I started looking at extensions.gnome.org and found a few extensions that add "docks" to the top-bar of gnome, so I can quickly switch between apps with a single click.

  • Are there similar extensions to Unity?
  • Is there any way to un-group all the instances?

One of the best reasons to use Unity is that it saves some screen space, so I do not want to use tint2 or gnome-panel.

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

1 Answer

ALT-TAB between applications

and

ALT-~ between instances of the application

and

ALT-[1-9] between tabs within the instance of the application

SO: ALT-TAB to the right application then ALT-~ to the right instance and then ALT-[tabnumber] to the right tab. After some practise you get quick. Good luck tabbing.
