In the last hour, my ubuntu 11.10 on Toshiba Satellite A70 has crashed. I can't do anything on the laptop & have to remove battery to power off. I installed ubuntu 11.10 from live CD. As I'm novice programmer, l usually have 3-4 other applications running incl. firefox. Where do I get the error log to show points of crash? The latest crash happened while using eclipse indigo java ee for web developers, firefox, gimp & gimp help. My system info: Linux & Win XP (50:50 partioned); kernel release 3.0.0_15-generic, i386; 32-bit OS.

Why is this happening? How can I avoid this becoming a frequent problem? I am worried that my hard drive may also crash!

I appreciate all help. Many thanks sizha

was it from the begining of the fresh ubuntu installation or after you install your apps. check what program uses more resources(use TOP command in the terminal) and please provide some info about your laptop(cpu, ram) – aking ubuntu Apr 17 '12 at 12:36
this was after installing apps. It has worked fine since fresh install 3 months ago. Sorry am clueless on using TOP - how do i use TOP? Do i just type TOP at terminal - says not a command. – sizha Apr 18 '12 at 2:20

hi Prasad again. Found out about top! thanks. Eclipse using most memory & is the app i'm developing on. Laptop info: 1 processor,Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz, 1024kb cache size, 19G HDD (30% used), 1.1Gib ram. Thanks again - i appreciate your time. – sizha Apr 18 '12 at 2:44
I got bored with 11.10 because of the lacking performance and switched back to 10.10 and running like a lightning strike now! I also got the same CPU and ram size. try 10.10 or 10.04 LTS. or wait for 12.04 to be released. most of the beta users have said it's more reliable than 11.10 and faster. – aking ubuntu Apr 18 '12 at 3:30
hanks a lot. I'll try 10.10 - it's my 1st time using linux so it all takes an age for me to get anything right! Good learning though. thanks again for your trouble. – sizha Apr 18 '12 at 3:47
