I have upgraded my Ubuntu to 10.04 and I am facing this problem of COMP_WORDS bad array subscript when I press TAB for certain completion. I thought, it is a bug with bash-completion package and I purged it. But even after that, I still face this. If it is a bug with bash package, how I can resolve it?

It is difficult for a developer to live with this bug in the system.

That is just moving the system .bashrc to your home directory. It may not help. –  Senthil Kumaran Nov 10 '10 at 6:41

@senthil But does it help in your case? If you do this, back up your existing .bashrc first. This copies over a system default .bashrc, which will wipe out any changes you have. –  belacqua Feb 15 '11 at 4:10

Nope, it did not help. I had to uninstall bash-complete package. –  Senthil Kumaran Feb 15 '11 at 4:17

@senthil -- Hmm, that's too bad. But the uninstall fixed it satisfactorily? I was about to recommend looking into the system settings too, e.g., /etc/profile,/etc/bash.bashrc , /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh –  belacqua Feb 15 '11 at 4:31

A quick workaround could be using another shell like fish.
