I would look at what kernel you are running in both Backtrack and Xubuntu. I assume the backtrack kernel is older and does not have as many drivers. You might wanna look at something called compat-wireless (you should use it anyway on backtrack)

1.To view your kernel version

 uname -r

2.visit http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable#compat-wireless_stable_releases to see about installing the newer kernel drivers as well.1 (you will have to compile the drivers for your Backtrack install)
