I am new to Ubuntu and have recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop edition on my Windows XP operating system as a separate software (So i can select Ubuntu OS while booting).

I am curious to know how can i install other softwares on my new Ubuntu. Specifically, i am interested in installing Apache server and APE server.

Please let me know the procedure for installing the new softwares.

Are you really using Ubuntu 8.10? You should update to at least 10.04 as 8.10 is no longer supported. Here is a guide to installing Apache, PHP and MySQL. – edm Apr 9 '12 at 13:05

Download the 10.04 or 11.10 or 12.04 beta cd and install. – psusi Apr 9 '12 at 14:42

Since you are on such an old version, to upgrade to 12.04 LTS (which isnt released until the 26th) you would have to upgrade 4 times 8.10>9.04>9.10>10.04LTS>12.04LTS. So your best option is to download a later version (probably 10.04 LTS or 11.10) and do a fresh install. Then when 12.04LTS is released you can do a direct upgrade. – edm Apr 9 '12 at 14:45
