After boot I have to right click and click "enable wireless" then it connects without issue.

How can I make it enabled by default?

networkmanager.state is enablewireless = "true"

'connect automatically' works fine when wireless is enabled I searched the net for days without success.

Oh is it ? For me it is enabled by default. Have you made any changes to config file or is same since you installed OS ? – mac Apr 4 '12 at 11:52
I don't understand the last sentence in the first paragraph, can you rephrase it please? – Jeff Welling Apr 4 '12 at 12:07
After booting up run this command in terminal rfkill list. See if the wi-fi is hard blocked or soft blocked. If hard block then you need to see if wi-fi is blocked while booting up in BIOS – Web-E Apr 4 '12 at 13:45
did any of the answers or commens help? – tohuwawohu Apr 11 '12 at 9:09

The wireless interface may be deactivated on boot based on BIOS settings. So it may help already to check the BIOS if it allows to enable WLAN on boot-up by default. If it doesn't, it may be sufficient to enable the WiFi device using the appropriate key combination (for Asus, usually Fn + F2) during boot.
