When I try to download any thing of any sort it gives me this weird folder and it doesn't install or go on my computer. I am not sure how to fix it. Please help?

Installing software on Ubuntu is a little different than what you might be used to if you're a Windows user. Your best bet for installing things is to use the Ubuntu Software Centre. – Chris Granger Apr 3 '12 at 22:08
or synaptic or even muon but is better ubuntu sofware center.try reinstall your ubuntu again.its open or free the most applications on ubuntu sofware center, and all open (with some restritions in some cases)on synaptic. – user49523 Apr 3 '12 at 22:16
@user49523 Why would you tell her to reinstall her OS? She just needs to learn how to use it... I don't think Synaptic is installed by default, and it's probably too complicated for a brand new Ubuntu user at any rate. – Chris Granger Apr 3 '12 at 22:16

It sounds like you are trying to install Windows software.

Windows software doesn't work on Linux, unless you first install a program that helps it pretend to be Windows.

The "weird folder" is probably the software installer being opened as an archive.

Instead of downloading Windows software, why not browse the Software Centre application and try to find a piece of software that does what you want?
