I want to use Thunderbird for making backups. This is a read-only operation and does not require an outgoing mail server.

Thunderbird, however, apparently feels it knows more about my needs than I do and disables the button I need for adding a POP3 account until a working, tested (!) SMTP server is added:

I'm about ready to stab my computer screen out of frustration. How do I regain control?


Please don't ask me to use a different mail client. I understand that there are a variety of alternative methods for performing email backups, but I specifically want a solution that uses Ubuntu's default, officially supported application.

"use thunderbird for making backups" - what?! If you want to make backups, you use a backup program. Thunderbird is an email client. As such, it sends and receives email. To send, you need an smtp server.

If you want to just be able to read email but not send it, then you can change the auto detect settings so they don't need to be detected, and it will let you create the account without testing.

There are plenty of backup programs to choose from, and several questions on this site asking about that with good answers. Change the auto detect settings so it doesn't have to detect, and you can create the accoun without testing. –  psusi Mar 28 '12 at 14:20
