Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am working on a Photo-booth installation, and i want to take 4 photos (this i have figured out), and then combine them so they are on a a4 paper sheet ready to be printed.

I need to do this through the console, so I can automate the whole process. I have looked at http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php, but I can only figure out how to overlay the images.

You need the montage command. I haven't got any examples to hand, but I've used it in the past, and there are some good examples at the link and also here:

I've used

convert *.png result.pdf

and then used evince's option to print 4 pages per sheet.

Maybe this can point you in a viable direction.

The OP is asking for a console method to print. As far as I know the Evince don't have the option to print from command line. –  yossile Mar 13 '12 at 8:31

This was meant as a pointer rather than a complete solution. It is not unlikely that, if indeed evince doesn't support command line printing, then some other tool can do it. It might even be possible to use 'convert' options to make a proper pdf, and then use 'lpr' for printing it. –  apr3ntice Mar 13 '12 at 8:58

Pointers are better as comments, not answers. –  hexafraction Jul 20 '12 at 22:00
