Maybe the solution given in this thread can be of help:

Try installing pavucontrol by opening a terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

or via Ubuntu Software Center.

After installation, you should be able to configure your audio device with this gui.

Open pavucontrol, go to last tab labeled 'configuration'. From the dropdown-menu, choose your prefered audio module. The choices given there depend on your hardware setup, so I can't tell for sure whether this solves your problem. Just give it a try.

The question was either about some proprietary up and down mix mode that is not available for Ubtuntu or inbuilt multichannel audio speakers, not digital output via HDMi and S/PDIF or audio passthrough. –  LiveWireBT Jul 2 '13 at 20:11
