I want to remove the top panel from unity and unity-2D without crashing it, as i want to replace it with a dock such as docky, dockbarx, GLX-cairo dock, or Avant Windows Navigator dock.

Desktop

As in this link, but the top panel could not be removed, so how to do it, and can I restore it back?

correct - I'm just making you aware of the implications of removing the panel - you lose the global-menu. – fossfreedom Mar 9 '12 at 17:06
