I have a laptop with ubuntu 11.10. The a major portion of the LCD display stopped working after I dropped the laptop. I would like to use this laptop as a desktop by using an external monitor.

I am unable to configure the nvidia-xserver without being able to see on the broken LCD screen. Is there a way for me to duplicate the display on to an external monitor by running a set of commands from a terminal?

Thanks.

Check out http://www.ubuntugeek.com/dual-monitors-with-nvidia.html

You will need to configure the "Twinview" options. Hopefully you installed SSH before you lost the screen :)
