I am on Ubuntu 11.10 and this is at least my 20th install of Ubuntu and have had a fair few niggling issues with it. The most annoying is the fact that when I go to shutdown the laptop from the cog, whether logged in or not it simply restarts - everytime! The only way to prevent this is to hold the power button, or keep it in hibernate - not ideal.

Recently I faced exactly similar issue Debian. I feel like I face this after installing TLP application on my system. Have you installed TLP in your machine. – Abhijeet Feb 27 '12 at 15:28
have you tried shutting down on terminal? sudo halt or sudo shutdown -h now – Gerep Feb 27 '12 at 15:41
thanks for the replies.... Abhijeet - dont know what TLP is! Gerep - tried both. sudo halt freezes at the purple screen after it has gone throught the dots. **Sudo shutdown -h now ** does the same as shutdown from the cog. i have checked bios settings and reset everything but still no joy. – user49270 Mar 5 '12 at 9:16
