I'm not sure why I can't get imageJ (http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/index.html) to start on my computer running oneiric 64-bit.

sudo apt-get install imagej

Installation is fine, but it won't start (not even in the terminal, and there is no error output).

The version in the repos looks to be the same as the one on the site. I'm using openjdk-7, so I wonder if this is the problem.

EDIT: filed a bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/imagej/+bug/941087

I had the same problem a few days ago. If you follow the instructions in the README, you'll find that you can extract the "ImageJ" folder and double click the file "run." That's how I was able to run the program.

from which folder: the apt-installed location (/usr/share/imagej) or from the file downloaded directly from the website? –  amc Feb 23 '12 at 4:17

I had to download the version from the website. The one in the repos doesn't work and this is the one I (and I suspect, many other users) want to be using. I'd like a better answer, regarding openjdk-7. –  amc Feb 24 '12 at 2:24

I used the .tar file direct from the website (ij145-x86.tar.gz). Can't help you with openjdk-7...I'm using it too, but it's not causing any problems for me. –  David Howiler Feb 27 '12 at 12:50
