I just bought Acer AspireOne D257 computer, with pre-installed MeeGo OS. I am quite put off by its interface and usability, and want to install Ubuntu instead. I made a bootable USB stick following the instructions from Ubuntu website, but when I stick it on to my netbook, nothing happens. Also, MeeGoo doesn't have a "Restart" option (it is adviced that computer should be restarted after sticking in bootable Ubuntu usb). What should I do? I am a total newbee, please give me step-by-step instructions, if possible. Thanks!

Have you tried the suggestions here - especially the changing the boot order in your BIOS advice? askubuntu.com/questions/95565/… – fossfreedom Feb 18 at 11:18

I have installed Meego in the past several times and then wiped it and replaced it with Ubuntu

First a few questions. 1 have you tested your USB pen drive on another machine to check it has worked correctly? 2 Can you tell us how you went about creating your pen drive?

When you do get it to work properly try to restart your netbook/laptop and hit f12 when it boots past the bios (when you see the Acer logo) (if this does not work then you need to follow the advice above from fossfreedom about ensuring your BIOS allows a boot from USB although it should do as it is fairly new.

There you should see a list of options from where to boot from including your USB. Select that one and you will be asked then if you wish to test or install Ubuntu

I would try it first if I were you to ensure that it is what you want and all your hardware works ok.

Assuming you like Ubuntu and it all seems to work you then need to back up any data that you want to transfer ...bookmarks/documents/music etc on your current Meego (so you will have to boot in Meego again).

When these are backed up from Meego (perhaps on your pen drive or on the cloud) turn your pc off and on again and hit f12.

Select install ubuntu and follow the instructions to replace your Meego system with Ubuntu ( you will for instance have to choose between Dual Booting - Not advisable in my opinion or wiping it completely and installing Ubuntu.

It does sound to me as if your problems are to do with your USB installation and not Meego but if it has installed ok on your pen drive then the above should work.

As for a restart function Moblin and Meego used to ignore this function as it was at the time just as quick to power off and then power on again.

Let us know how you get on.
