Possible Duplicate:
Build Ubuntu from source, for speed

I like what your doing. Just wanted to know is there a way to locally compile the stable system... and where is the make.conf or something similar file?

If you wish to compile a whole system on your own, you should consider other distributions like Gentoo or Arch Linux. What is your exact goal? –  Lekensteyn Feb 15 '12 at 18:34

I agree, if you are wanting to build from source you are, IMO, much better off with gentoo or LFS. You can build on Arch as well, but arch is, IMO, also a binary distro. What makes you want to build from source ? –  bodhi.zazen Feb 15 '12 at 19:32

If you want to compile for testing packages then check out launchpad and preparing your system for Ubuntu software development.

If you're looking to actually build the system from source for end user use, like bodhi.zazen asks. why would you want to build from source?
