This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

Why are you removing the passwd for root in the first place?

Try opening a terminal and typing sudo passwd root at the command line. Enter the password you supplied to Ubuntu when you installed for the first time. If it ask you to type in a NEW passwd then the current one was accepted. You will have to type in NEW password twice. ONce for the initial and again to verify they are both correct. After that all instances that require super user permissions such as installing packages etc... you would use sudo preceded by the command you are issuing. Example: sudo apt-get install "package name" will ask you for the root passwd before continuing and then if supplied correctly it will execute the command.

You don't need a password for root.

The root account login is disabled by default on Ubuntu and instead the first user account that is created is given sudo permissions to run administrative commands.

Ubuntu was one of the first distributions to do this.

When you are asked to provide an administrators password, this is your password.

If you have lost your password, you can recover it.
