So, here is my problem, maybe someone is able to help with that:

I am using Ubuntu 11.10. Everything worked fine so far When I booted my laptop this weekend, it didn't seem to boot properly. But it did, it only happened the actual desktop environment didn't start.

After using startx I can at least access that one now. But so far I realized some other problems with that: I can't mount external drives, the sound didn't work and I can't change anything about the users.

Now, I fixed the sound with chmod -R a+rwX /dev/snd after noticing that aplay -l does not work, but sudo aplay -l does.

So, all my drivers are here, but they don't seem to get connected with my account anymore. I have no idea how that happened or what to do about it. The last thing before the last proper shut down was to change the automatic login of my account to on.

Has anyone an idea about this? Help is very much appreciated. (Or need some additional information?)

Have you been playing with chmod lately? :~) – mikewhatever Feb 14 at 15:09
I have one question for you: which laptop you use? But no answer to my question, can I you answer. First, verify that all system components identified (see System Info for processor and graphics, and other special use programs that use the various components). It should once again to check the drivers using the Additional Drivers. Although it is possible that there are no drivers for certain components (graphics, optical drive ...). If no more drivers for your laptop remains only to wait for manufacturers to recall and Ubuntu users make drivers for their products. If your laptop is older, it c – legospace9876 Feb 14 at 16:14
Nop. Course not. Just the only partly solution I found so far. :/ – Puroko Feb 15 at 5:55
It does sound like a permissions problem. If you create a new user and log in as them, does it resolve the issue in the new account? – amc May 1 at 15:46
