Many users are disappointed of Ubuntu 11 with Unity desktop. It's still buggy and slow. If you feel everything is slow, downgrade to Ubuntu 10 which is the most usable version. I believe things will work fine in Ubuntu 12 which will be released in April. You can tryout Luninux 11.10, which uses Gnome 3 instead of Unity. Luninux is a MacOS like and developped from Ubuntu, but a better working OS(See below). Download --> http://luninuxos.com/?page_id=18 Lulinux

I am sorry but this is not an answer to the question asked. You are providing alternatives to Unity, but the question asked was why the Unity launcher is not being displayed. – Nik Feb 8 '12 at 13:01
OK.. Unity is only working well in recently released computers. Others can't offer that much hardware resources JUST for unity. So there is CURRENTLY NO ANSWER for the above question. The fix is Ubuntu 10, or (11.10 + GNOME 3) which is Luninux. – Naveen Feb 17 '12 at 11:23
