I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a fresh formatted hard drive (i.e. there is no other OS on my PC). İnstallation went smooth from start to finish, but the system appears to be quite slow.

With slow I mean that it takes some time for the windows to open up, and even a bit longer for them to close when I hit the "x" buttons. When I try to open up a media file on Banshee, the Banshee-window freezes and doesn't even close (kind of freezes) and the system gets even more slow.

For example, after starting Banshee it takes about 10 to 20 seconds to open another window, like for example, a system folder.

Is that behavior normal?

My hardware info:

Intel Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz)
1 GB RAM
80 GB HDD
Intel Graphics

Your system is quite dated, and would be unable to run Unity without slowdown I suggest you install LXDE or XFCE To install LXDE, please follow this answer. Or, to install XFCE follow this answer – Amith KK Feb 6 at 7:47
How much memory does your system use when you open Banshee and do you have a swap partition? – Octavian Damiean Feb 6 at 22:27
