I'm running Windows XP and Ubuntu 11.10 as a dual boot, however, at the grub screen, the only way to boot Ubuntu is to select recovery mode and then select resume normal boot.

If I select the proper way to boot Ubuntu however, the screen goes black and then after a while goes to a screen with some text that looks like a terminal screen.

How do I make it so this does not happen?

EDIT* I justst installed it using the disk I had made back when I dual booted my other computer awhile back, and I just partioned my disks in the setup.

When I'm in the text mode I think it is fully functional because when I go Ctrl + Alt + F1 it gives me the option to login, but its all text based.

please add you your graphics card to your question (lspci | grep VGA) as well as any graphics drivers that you may have installed via the Additional Drivers screen. – fossfreedom♦ Feb 5 at 22:37
i have a geforce 6150 LE and i checked for additional drivers and there were none. It is also an athlon 64 cpu if that helps any. – Loagn Feb 6 at 1:03
weired, How did you accomplish the dual boot? is the text mode fully operational, or is it busybox? The answer to these questions can help narrow down the issue, and possibly come up with a solution. – user45168 Feb 6 at 5:21
Sounds to me like either X is crashing, or he installed with an alternate or server install CD and there is no X. – aking1012 Apr 24 at 22:56
