Basically, I have this old computer and I want to install Ubuntu 11.10 on it.

After installing it ejects the CD and refuses to restart so i use Ctrl+Alt+Del. After that, when it starts up it shows a grub-rescue prompt.

The restart freezes after - Asking all remaining processes to terminate [ok]

Initially, I thought it was because my HDD is slave(and the only HD) so I changed it. Same sequence re-occurs.

My CD Drive is also slave. (does it change something?)

Also, when I click Try Ubuntu, it boots into the shell with a white screen. I can see texts from the unity sidebar, I can open programs but it is all white. During installation, everything is OK.

Specifications:
AMD Athlon 1.8 GHz
1 GB of SDRAM
ASUS A7V133-VM
Nvidia GeForce 5600 128MB
Western Digital 250 GB HDD
.

Maybe, I should use 11.04, because I'm new to Linux(?)

11.04 is End of Life, and has no future support. As well, 11.10 is going to end of life in April. You should use 10.04 or 12.04 (if possible) – The Lord of Time Mar 8 at 6:35

That may be a permissions issue regarding the .Xauthority file which is root only thus it prevents you from shutting down your computer. Press Alt+Control+F1 and type sudo rm ~/.Xauthority

Since you are new to Ubuntu i would recommend ubuntu 11.04 or 10.10 LTS which dont use Unity which may be a little heavy for your computer,Lubuntu or Puppy Linux are also a good choise for a lightweight linux os.

I can't seem to find download for 11.04. Also, what about the grub-rescue after the installation and white screen on the Try Ubuntu? – Rudolfs Feb 5 '12 at 9:26
@Rudolfs you can get the 11.04 distro here releases.ubuntu.com/natty .The white screen might be a drivers issue type these commands: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current but since you are new to the whole linux thing i believe ubuntu 10.10 would be the best choice both for your experience, the long term support for the version and for your computer specs. – Nick Feb 5 '12 at 9:30
Ok, i will try the 10.10 :) – Rudolfs Feb 5 '12 at 9:41
@Nick, I believe you meant 10.04 LTS. 10.10 is not LTS – williamvoor May 12 '12 at 8:57
