I'm currently using JACK and a VST synth to play back some MIDI to audio. I've got it working quite well, actually, except for the audio output.
The audio output is essentially TERRIBLE. It hardly sounds polyphonic at all, but is basically a maxed out square signal, with only subtle differences between different synth sounds. I've tested other MIDI to audio applications in JACK and they're giving similar results, so it must be Jack, ALSA, or my sound card.
