I am running Xubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Lattitude E7250 (intel video card) and have a Dell E-Port Plus docking station. The docking station has 2 DVI ports and 2 DP (DisplayPort) ports on the back. The monitors accept DVI or DP, but I currently only have DVI cables. The 2 monitors are Dell 22 inch monitors (Model P2210).

When I dock the laptop and run xrandr, it doesn't even see the monitors as connected at all (neither does Xubuntu's graphical Display config). xrandr output is:

~ $ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 277mm x 156mm
   1366x768 60.0*+ 47.5
   1360x768 59.8 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

As you can see, it doesn't even list any DVI outputs. If I dock the laptop powered down and turn it on, X won't even start.

I soldiered on writing an xorg.conf that I hoped would work based on previous configurations like this (same monitors and dock, older laptop). My preferred setup is for each monitor to have it's own X screen, hence the usage of ZaphodHeads.

Using this config, X won't start. Here's my current xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"

    Option "Monitor-DVI2" "Monitor1"
EndSection

I tried this with HDMI1/2, DP1/2, and DVI1/2 (shown here) as the outputs.

My most recent Xorg log looks like this:

I have tried booting with the laptop lid closed or without. When I go to a virtual terminal, the 2 external moniters fire up and mirror the laptop's screen. But no X no way, no how. Any ideas? I'm going to pick up some DP cables tomorrow to see if that does the trick. But this exact same setup works in Windows 7, so I'm loathe to throw more hardware at the problem.
