I had the same problem. The System would not boot with radeon loaded. I did this:

add blacklist radeon to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

add these lines before 'exit 0' in /etc/rc.local

modprobe radeon
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

Remember to make rc.local executable.

Now the radeon module will be re-loaded, vgaswitcheroo will be reenabled and the ATI card will be turned off. Cooler, quieter

  • I should add that deactivating the dedicated gfx card will cause 'atombios stuck in loop..' errors when logging out/shutting down the system. As far as I can see, it does not damage anything, but it delays logout a bit. To make that go away, one must re-activate the dedicated card before logging out

  • Thank you. This seems to resolve my blank screen issue as well under ubuntu natty on ThinkPad T400 (with Radeon Switchable Graphics). I also set the BIOS under ThinkPad to always use external graphics.

  • I wish I had a BIOS option. I dont understand why the manufacturers omit so many options

You can boot with the radeon module blacklisted and then load it in rc.local (modprobe radeon). This made my system boot stable.

oh as can see, you don't need radeon card, right? you're happy with integrated GPU? if so, simply delete (with synaptics) xorg drivers for radeon (package names are like xorg-driver-ati and xorg-driver-radeon or something similar) the problem is that those drivers somehow won't work properly with default kernel of ubuntu 11.04

i just did that. intel card works just as it used to. vga_switcheroo is in place. everything's good but you can't use radeon card, of course.

  • I removed these packages but radeon module still alive
