So I got a VPS and I am trying to SSH into it but I keep getting this denied error

Permission denied (publickey,password).

Here is my config file.

I also did ssh with -vvv here is the output

I have masked the IP, But I am not sure if it is my end with the problem or their end, I am fairly new to SSH I have changed the password and tried it again, still says same error. can you see why?

Thanks

  • Did you add your public key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file for the definity user on the VPS, or to the root account? Moreso, are you sure there is a 'definity' account on your VPS to connect to? Sep 10, 2013 at 21:58

This is most likely caused by incorrect permissions on private key (client) or authorized_keys (server side).

Please make sure the following

  • client side: mode bits of ~/.ssh => 0700, logged in user has read access to the private key, e.g. ~/.ssh/id_rsa mode bits 0600
  • server side: mode bits of ~/.ssh/authorized_keys => 0600

If it is still not working, try to run sshd (server side) in debug mode in foreground /usr/sbin/sshd -Dd

Connect to the sshd ssh user@host -vvv

See output from both side, you should be able to see the files causing the problem and fix.
