I deleted line 57 which was caused the problem but put it back in and the software center opens then closes straight away and i still havent installed skype. any help with the software center and getting skype would help.. thanks. The file:

You have to specify the version before "partner" on those lines, like this:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner

Your Skype needs to be updated to version 6.20 or up. See the Skype download website; it works for me. 6.11 or down is an old Skype version, and all Skype versions older than 6.14 are now being retired, which means that you no longer can use your 6.11 or down version.
